I don’t imagine I’ll have any sympathizers out there, aside from my family, when I say that I wished the tester I had last week had been scheduled for my week off in July. The 2013 Dodge Journey, in its fully-loaded R/T Rallye AWD trim, would’ve made for ideal early-summer road-trip wheels. A few of the family-friendly features that could’ve made life on a long highway trek to wherever included under-front-passenger-seat-cushion storage, two cooler/storage bins under the second-row floor, a rear nine-inch video screen, third-row seating, an 8.4-inch centre-stack touch screen, child booster seats in the second row, a great navigation system, and a 3.6-litre V6 engine with gobs of haul power. Inside Up front All of the above did make travels in and around the city a pleasure, but there was plenty more that kept us happy behind the wheel and in the passenger seats through seven summer-like days.
As usual, we’ll start inside and upfront where that huge, 8.4-inch Uconnect touch screen ate up most of the centre-stack area. I absolutely loved the easy functionality of that screen and all the vehicle features it controlled, including radio (satellite); the DVD player (also played on that screen when in park); controls for the driver and front passenger seat heaters, steering-wheel heater, and the 115-volt household-style plug; the tri-zone climate; Bluetooth; Navigation and more. Everything was a cinch to work from that screen or through voice commands for certain items. The Garman GPS Navigation was one of the best I’ve ever used. Some of its features included: Lane Assist, which guided you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, and made unfamiliar intersections and exits easier to navigate; Junction View realistically displayed 3-D road signs and junctions along your route; Speed Limit and Current Speed displayed on the main map let you know at a glance whether you were within the posted speed limit; and ‘Where Am I?’ was a one-touch emergency locater that displayed latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address, and the closest hospital, police and gas stations. The big LCD touch screen also showed the backup camera’s image which included big guide lines.
Large dials and buttons under that screen allowed me to work the climate control (tri-zone) and other features of the HVAC system. My driver’s seated had six-way power movement, including four-way power lumbar. The passenger seat had manual movement only.
Both seats had well-bolstered seatbacks and wide, comfortable cushions; each could be heated in Hi/Lo settings. The red stitching looked good on the black leather seating throughout the Journey. The leather-wrapped steering wheel was nice and thick and had a good feel; it had tilt and telescoping movement and housed controls for Bluetooth, cruise and vehicle information from the LCD display between the tach and speedo guages. The backside of the wheel at the centre hand positions had the usual (for Chrysler products) controls for audio volume on the right and channel selection on the left. There was a high, narrow tranny wall between the driver and front passenger, but it didn’t interfere with leg room or comfort; the armrest and its accompanying bin had a wide cover with more of that black leather and red stitch; under the cover was a good-sized bin with auxiliary and USB inputs (illuminated) and a 12-volt power source.
There was some wide, airbag-stuffed B and C pillars, a big D pillar and some rear seats that challenged visibility from the driver’s seat, but big windows in the second and even the third row helped, as did the previously-mentioned rear-view camera image on the stack screen and the Park-Sense rear park assist system. Visibility of rear-passenger goings-on was possible with a look up to the roof console interior observation mirror. Noise, vibration and harshness were noticeably missing from drives in the city and on the highway. More upfront features included: push-button start, six-speaker premium audio system, door bottle holders, two console cupholders (illuminated), LED map lights, illuminated glovebox, deep open cubby under centre stack, height-adjustable seatbelts, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.
Second row The second-row 60/40 tilt and slide seats were just as comfortable as the front seats, but offered loads of versatility as they could fold up and slide forward with a simple pull of a lever on the side of each outboard seatback. That procedure made for easy access to the third row.

The seatbacks could also move fore and aft and recline a good distance for added space and comfort when you watched the nine-inch DVD screen on the second-row roof console which also housed cooling and heating controls. Passengers also had access to wireless headphones and a video remote controller. The 115-volt power source, another 12-volt source and gaming inputs were on the back of the centre console bin. The seatbacks could also fold flat for more cargo-hauling options, as could the third-row seatbacks and the front-passenger seatback (great feature!). Entry to the second-row seats was simple for humans of all sizes as the step-up height was low and the doors opened nice and wide. As I mentioned earlier, each outboard seat cushion could be converted to a booster seat for a child; all it took was a simple tug on a strap and up popped the booster; Olivia loved it and said it was much more comfortable than her own.
A third passenger could squeeze into the middle seat for a short trip, but they’d have to fight for shoulder room and the high tranny bump could leave you splay-legged or in the fetal position. Rear passengers also had access to bottle holders and storage in each door; a pouch on the driver’s seatback; a fold-down armrest with two cupholders; LED ceiling lights; and easy-to-access lower tether anchors for baby seats. Third row Little humans could find comfort on the third-row 50/50 split-fold bench and they would have access to a drink holder on each wall armrest along with their own LED reading lights. All those LEDs on the ceiling, by the way, provided nice lighting for entry at night. Again, entry and exit to and from the third-row were tasks made quite simple by the slide/fold function of the second-row seats; I made my way back there, laptop in one hand and a hot cup of tea in the other, without any spills, back strain, or laptop drop.
Cargo The space behind the third-row seatback had room for a small load of groceries and the floor lifted up to expose some storage bins to hide the Oreo cookies. There was the standard Chrysler LED flashlight mounted on the left wall and there was another 12-volt power source and some metal tie-down hooks along with a cargo net. I liked having the third row and I did have an opportunity to use it; it was Davide’s favourite seat on most drives. Outside My tester’s Brilliant Red Tri-Coat paint would be my choice colour and I received a few comments on it from other Journey owners. I also liked the look of the body-coloured door handles and mirrors. The Journey Rallye R/T also included ‘touch-unlock’ front door handles; LED puddle lights under each front door; windshield-wiper defroster; roof rack with moveable cross rails; dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets; and 255/55R19 M&S tires on satin carbon aluminum wheels.
The drive The 283-horsepower V6 engine moved the R/T’s 1,900-plus-kilograms with ease. A stomp of the throttle could get the SUV’s speedo needle to 100 km/hr in 8.2 seconds, while it could manage an 80-to-120 km/hr highway pass manoeuver in just 5.2 seconds. The Journey’s six-speed manumatic transmission was a smooth operator and moved quietly through the gears, even when under pressure on the hills or just from my heavy right foot. Gov’t of Canada fuel economy ratings for the R/T were 12.8 litres/100km city and 8.2 hwy; I managed 13.8 over seven days of mostly hot-weather city drives (said the Journey’s average fuel economy readout). The R/T also had an on-demand all-wheel drive system which kept power to the front wheels until it detected that the rears had to do some work. Overall handling and drive feel felt stable and secure when moving at speed or making quick lane changes.
Helping the Journey R/T was a sport suspension, its firm-feel power steering and some four-wheel disc brakes which brought it smoothly and quickly down from speed. Electronic stability control, traction control and electronic-roll mitigation were standards on all Journey trims. The end On the whole, it was not hard to see why the Dodge Journey has been the best-selling mid-sized crossover in Canada and the eighth best-selling light truck as it offered a host of family-friendly features, plenty of infotainment tech, room for up to seven passengers, exceptional cargo-hauling versatility, a robust power plant and affordable pricing. My only nitpicks would be the lack of cargo space behind the third row, rearward visibility and the fact that I couldn’t have had it for my July vacation (however, I will be content with the Dodge Ram 1500 that week).

In accordance with applicable law, all vehicles manufactured after September 2007 have Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (“TPMS”). Applicable law may require TPMS sensors to be rebuilt and/or re-calibrated at the point of installation of new tires. Goodyear has attempted to include this cost into Customer’s Order, however where for any reason this cost has not been included there may be an additional charge at the installer to service TPMS sensors in accordance with applicable law. Certain states have graduated tire disposal fees.
